I was leaving a cozy Parisian apartment where I had an enjoyable and leisurely lunch with five delightful women, three American and two French. Our menu included cauliflower soup drizzled with walnut oil and garnished with sautéed wild mushrooms, braised Guinea fowl with apples, and a chocolate mousse. Only hours earlier had we all met, for the very first time, at one of Paris’ open air farmers’ market. While walking the market we planned our meal and bought the ingredients. After that what unfolded was a memorable afternoon of cooking, eating and talking.
An afternoon with Cooking Rehoboth will not take you to Paris, but for a few moments, in this vacation resort, you’ll feel like you live here. We will begin at 11:00 am in the instructor’s kitchen to start dessert. After all, there is always fresh fruit at the market, so before we set off to the market we will get a pie crust done and chilling in the refrigerator.
While we are preparing the pie dough, we will talk about the culinary heritage of Delmarva. Once the vegetable garden for Philadelphia and New York, today we still grow a vast variety of fresh produce that is all available at the farmers’ market. But we are also known for our oysters, clams, crabs, lobsters, fin fish, and chicken – lots of chicken. Delmarva has an extended growing season and some very gifted and hard working farmers. There is always an abundance of fresh ingredients.
While the pie dough chills in the refrigerator, we will go off to the market. We will look. We will talk. We will plan a menu, buy the ingredients, and return to the kitchen to cook, chat and eat. We might even come back from the market with fresh cream and wild black raspberries to make a fool, rather than a pie for desert. You never know.
We will prepare a casual, yet elegant, lunch – one that you will feel confident making at home with similar ingredients. . You can watch, or you can roll up your sleeves and get to work. You decide your level of involvement in preparing each dish. A few days later, via email, you’ll receive recipes of what we prepared that day. Those recipes will be a reminder of the best day of your entire stay in Rehoboth Beach!
Besides the Farmers' Market, We Offer Private Events
Not everyone can make it to the farmer's market, so we offer private events, for up to ten participants. The instructor will come to your residence, with all the ingredients for a menu, a menu that you have prearranged, and you and your guests will work the instructor to prepare the meal.
